Dr. Rajendra T.Vyas was born in an affluent, educated and esteemed family from Mumbai on 27 December 1929.He lost his eyesight the age of 12 year due to an eye ailment, but continued his education in the same school with the active support of his parents, siblings and peer groups. He completed his graduation from Ismail Yusuf College and further took a degree in law from Government college of Law. For some time he taught Law at K.C.College of Law. He was development officer of the National Association for the Blind, India [NAB] from 1958 to 1969. Then in 1969, he joined Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, London as Asia director and retired in 1990.

On his initiative,some likeminded blind persons came together and formed Blind Men’s Association on 19 October 1947, which is now known as Blind Persons’ Association [BPA]. He served BPA and NAB in his honorary capacity on various posts. He was also founder member of NAB.

Dr. Rajendra T.Vyas passed away on 29 August 2010. Looking at his tremendous contribution towards blind community, BPA decided to institute an award in his memory, which is conferred on a young student performing excellence in the academic career other than regular streams. This award is given on our Foundation Day with a Certificate of Excellence.
